Baking a Sustainable Future

with Warburtons

Building on a purpose to bake life a little better every day, Warburtons partnered with Future Food Movement to develop and activate its Responsible Business Plan, helping colleagues across the business turn big ambitions into practical action.

The challenge

Warburtons has always believed that doing the right thing is part of doing good business. As expectations around sustainability continued to grow, Britain’s most loved bakery brand wanted to bring together its social and environmental ambitions into a clear Responsible Business Plan. The Plan needed to reflect the company’s heritage and future ambitions and importantly, it had to resonate beyond the Boardroom and Responsible Business Team.

The challenge was not simply to define what Responsible Business means for Warburtons, but to create a strategy that could guide decisions across the organisation. From bakeries, depots and offices to customer-facing commercial teams, the goal was to make responsible business feel practical, relevant and genuinely part of everyday operations and decision-making.

Our approach

Future Food Movement partnered with Warburtons from ambition-setting through to implementation, helping shape and deliver Baking a Sustainable Future, the company's Responsible Business Plan.

Engaging the family, Board, senior leaders, subject matter experts, suppliers, customers and colleagues across Warburtons, we worked closely with the business to help define a strategic framework built around four action areas focused on climate, health, nature and community. Each is supported by clear priorities, targets and success measures brought together in a Responsible Business playbook in Warburtons brand style.

Our focus then shifted to activation. Bringing the voices of the teams behind the business into the process was key to delivering this successfully. We identified the priority internal audiences, their unique needs and the strategic communications approaches to inspire and activate each of them.

Together, we co-curated a suite of Responsible Business launch materials, story-led content, champion resources and a tailored activation toolkit for commercial teams to use in customer conversations.

As a family business celebrating our 150th birthday, we're always thinking long term. Baking a Sustainable Future is about doing the right thing for our people, communities and planet, but it's also about building a stronger, more resilient business. The real opportunity is when responsible business moves beyond strategy documents and becomes part of everyday conversations and decisions.

The impact

Warburtons now has a clear Responsible Business Plan, Baking a Sustainable Future, underpinned by strategic priorities, delivery roadmaps and a shared direction for the business.

Crucially, Warburtons commitment did not stop at strategy. The coordinated programme of communications, colleague engagement and practical activation resources, translated the Plan’s ambitions into language, tools and stories that colleagues could remember, relate to and put to use.

The result is a stronger connection between sustainability ambitions and the people delivering them. This has helped Responsible Business become more visible, relevant and embedded across the organisation.

The successful co-curated commercial activation pack has provided a project blueprint which we are now using with the procurement team. This work will continue to support Warburtons as they embed Responsible Business into the decisions that shape the future of the business every day.

The test of a Responsible Business Plan is whether colleagues actually use it.
